Human Touch

For us, it is very sad to watch the current trend occurring in the world of “personal accessories”, which is more and more products designed for Individual use, not for the mutual enjoyment by a Couple. You can take these products with you and pleasure yourself at whim. Mechanically.

Let’s let that sink in for a moment.

Alone. Void of Human interaction or contact.

Where is the Romance? Sharing? Anticipation? Planning for a Special Evening?

It occurred to me that perhaps people are unaware of the vital role Human Touch has automatically, unconsciously and biologically. Here is a quote from DignityHealth.org:

“Research suggests that being touched can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure, lessen depression and anxiety, boost your immune system, and even relieve pain. Simply put, being touched boosts your mental and physical wellness.”

And another from Healthline.com: “Skin-to-skin contact is vital not only for mental and emotional health but physical health, too. When you feel snowed under or pressured, the body releases the stress hormone cortisol. One of the biggest things touch can do is reduce such stress, allowing the immune system to work the way it should.”

Many years ago, I read of a London Hospital in World War II that had a woman named Anna who cleaned the Hospital. Whenever there was a Baby in the Hospital Ward that was not doing well and not expected to survive, the Baby was given to Anna. She carried the Baby with her in a sling on her front while she cleaned, singing, talking and humming all the while. All the Babies given to her survived and thrived in her care.

There have been many, many studies done about the importance of Human Touch and especially Skin to Skin contact. Many began in the 1940’s, even though recognition began in the13th Century. What began as a Language Deprivation Experiment had unexpected results. This “event” is known as “The Fredericks Experiment”: “An experiment allegedly carried out by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century saw young infants raised without human interaction in an attempt to determine if there was a natural language that they might demonstrate once their voices matured.” To read the full story of this tragic experiment, follow this link:

The Point Is: In our ever increasing technology culture, with “improved pleasure products”, self-administered and solo sessions may offer instant gratification and release, but they are NOT a substitute for Human Affection and Touch. Perhaps if Adults would practice more Intimacy Skills, Life would become more bearable and pleasant for ALL.
